Moran's, not your ordinary Italian, they're doing extraordinary things there

Hello Foodie Friends,

I was recently invited to dine at Moran's Italian Bistro & Brick Oven in Lake Worth.
Morans’ story is unique. It is owned by Dr. Robert Moran, an addiction specialist who owns and operates Wellington Retreat, a psychiatric and addictions treatment center. Dr. Moran believes in new beginnings, and uses Moran’s as a way to help create them. Unlike many other places, Moran’s employs people in recovery who are currently in transitional living situations. Several of their employees are in recovery and have come very far, and they are proud of them. Moran's has taken a bold step to turn away the extra profits that would come from the sale of beer and wine and chooses not to serve any alcohol, providing a safe place for those in recovery to eat and hang out. Moran’s serves pasta dishes, burgers, sandwiches and of course brick oven pizza.

On the evening that my friend Shaina and I arrived, we were greeted by Manager Jeff who asked us where we preferred to be seated. We followed him towards the back half of the restaurant which had been outfitted with comfortable looking couches and cocktail tables. It looked inviting, but we opted to sit in the main dining room area. We really didn't know what to expect. No one else was in the restaurant, which usually sends off a red flag. Still, we kept an open mind and began looking at the menu. Immediately our eyes opened wide and gravitated to the mushroom truffle pizza as well as the veggie one. Upon further investigation of the menu, we were intrigued by the beet salad and the shrimp scampi toasts- so it was decided, we'll try a little of each.

The beet salad was soooooooo yummy! We both loved it. It came with endive, candied walnuts, gorgonzola, red onion and their homemade lemon truffle vinaigrette.

The shrimp scampi toasts are created with white wine, lemon, peas, prosciutto and toasted garlic. (Shaina's served sans the prosciutto). When I saw that on the menu it made me think of the shrimp scampi crostini I've had a Martorano's many years ago. Although the presentation was slightly different from Martorano's, the flavors were amazing. I really enjoyed this dish!
Now on to the flatbread pizzas. The pizzas are made in their wood fired oven which is in plain site for the guests to view. The veggie pizza is made with wheat dough and topped with zucchini, squash, red onions, artichoke pesto and topped with arugula salad. We both thought it was very good. Shaina especially enjoyed this one.

The mushroom truffle pizza is made with truffle cream, wild mushrooms and truffle cheese. It was delish! It certainly rivals some of the best mushroom truffle pizzas we have both eaten in our life times.
